Camping near Detroit

We will be in the Detroit area in late July. Sterling State park looks like a good place, right on the shores of Erie, despite the apparent lack of shade. Does anyone know anything about this park? Are there better locations in the area? I saw that Lakeport State Park in Port Huron will be closed for repairs.
Thanks for the help, Fred

If you belong to a faternal orgination there may be a lodge with RV facilities, Alas the Taylor Moose is closed for the time so no joy there.

I stayed at the old Greenfield KOA, not called Greenfield-Detroit Campground, Not bad, fair Wi-Fi. full hookup though I took a 30 amp site, You might want to call ahead.

Algonac State Park is electric only with dump station and water fill station (It is N.E. of Detroit on Jeffereson.

Beyond that I can't help much. I used to have a low-power site in the city itself but, alas, last I knew I handed the title to the bank and said By By.
  • Thanks. I give up Dale, FHU??? Thanks for your input Flip. Dump station is nice, but do you have 50 amp?
  • Lake Chemung outdoor resort in Howell is a very nice place, about an hour from the D

except the dusty crappy gravel road you have to go down
  • None of the privately owned campgrounds on the south side of Detroit / Ann Arbor are worth a hill of beans in my opinion and L live there. You would do better camping in my backyard and yes, I have a dump station built in too.

    KOA..too expensive and noisy
    Pirolli Park...a dump
    Wilderness: Marginal and dirty
Totem Pole: ok but limited spaces
Harbortown: Nice but no trees and all concrete plus the management are dicks.
  • Just avoid the KOA in Summerfield Township off US 23 at exit 12. Very expensive and right next to the e-way so it's noisy.

My vote is for Sterling. It's clean and quiet.
  • Sterling is a FHU State park, one of only a few. There is Haas right on I-96 and then Wayne County RV Park and Fairgrounds right off I-94. These might be the closest.

If you are looking for quiet with electric only then Proud Lake SP, Pinckney Recreation Area, and Brighton Recreation Area would be the next best. All are within 40 minutes of downtown Detroit. It may depend on where you are going in the city. There are also some county parks in the northern suburbs or, with passports, there are several campgrounds in Canada. Just a short drive over the bridge or through the tunnel.
