Camping Near Helen GA

I am leading a Special Military Active and Retired Club (SMART) www.smartrving.org/caravans/html caravan thru Helen GA next Sept/Oct and am considering staying at either Leisure Acres or Yonah Mountain Campgrounds. We will have 20 RVs..about 5 40-43' Class A's and also some 37' Fifth Wheels and others in between. I would like to get some feedback regarding these two campgrounds by anyone who has stayed there. Reviews seem to be all over the place. I've looked at others but due to the number of RVs and time during Octoberfest in Helen, choices are limited. Would appreciate any feedback..thanks

  • Yo nah will be fine, but it will be very difficult to try to take any of your big rigs over the mountain thru Helen. Curves are tight and both vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be insanely heavy.

I gather from your question (and the nature of the caravan) that Unicoi State Park isn't an option. If that's wrong, you should check it out--it is V-E-R-Y nice.

Back to the question, the only campsite I've stayed at is Yonah Mountain Campground. It's been a while since I was there and I was pulling a 21' trailer at the time, so I'm guessing about its suitability for larger motorhomes. Still, I don't recall any reason why it wouldn't work for you. The campground was clean and well-maintained, and there was nothing unappealing about the clientele. (There's a long-term area in the back, but nothing unsightly.) The roads and the sites were gravel, but not a problem. I note that some of the reviews complain about the sites not being level--I don't recall that, but the campground is pretty much on flat ground so it's hard for me to imagine that the sites aren't level enough for a competent operator. The campground is very convenient to head north to Helen or south to Cleveland, plus it's right at the base of Mt. Yonah, which I find to be very picturesque. Note, though, that it is just a campground--not a "resort" by my estimation.

Incidentally, Mt. Yonah is a popular rock-climbing area and, relevant to your organization, a place where guys from the nearby "mountain phase" of Ranger school are sometimes brought for a day of "fun and play" on the rocks. (Probably not the way they'd describe it.) We were there once and loved watching the RIs "encourage" (again, I think most people would have a different characterization) the trainees to get their buns up the rock.

    Hope that helps,
