Don't forget that most new cars are not designed to charge a dead battery from the alternator. The alternator is designed to keep the battery topped off, but charging a flat battery pulls a lot of current causing a lot of heat and you risk burning up your alternator. The circuit cards aren't nearly what they use to be in these newer alternators.
