Maybe you should check to see if a fuse is out that would 'back light' the switches and/or the printed words.
Something to keep in mind, if you decide to put a light to shine down on the switches, use something other than white, either blue or red. We have a reading light for the driver and passenger that are both red.
Red will not 'blind' you if need to turn it on. A bright white light may very well blind you.
We also have ceiling lights in that area that are bright halogens for when we are parked (if needed).
