Can you leave the keys in without draining the batteries?

I was just watching an episode of "Breaking Bad" where Jessie leaves the keys in the ignition of his MH and a couple of days later, they go to take off only to find the batteries have been drained. O...

I think the notion comes from the fact that some newer keyless vehicles stay "awake" (but not noticeably so) anytime the fob is present in the vehicle, so their battery will die over several days.
