Although taxes are generally higher in Canada, some are dramatically higher.
When I purchased my previous motorhome I had intended to leave the US registration and plates on it, but since it was going to be a LOT cheaper to import it I did so. This is even more so with TT’s and 5’ers here in Ontario. A trailer has a plate that’s good for life, no expiry or renewal ever and you only pay sales tax at the time of purchase, same with vehicles, there’s no Ad Valorem or other annual taxes payable.
Despite what some people think, a US plated vehicle in Canada is no problem, I’ve had one for years, no issue, there are however some restrictions.
My two motorhomes cost me $108 a year and a $49 emission test every other year that they are abolishing the fee for shortly anyway.
Several friends of mine each bought the same basic make and model of TT, one lives here in Ontario, the other in Georgia. The one in Georgia pays nearly $700 a year in taxes, that he one here in Ontario (because it’s registered to his business) paid $0, just a few hundred in registration fees and for plates.
As was mentioned though, liquor and gasoline are taxed very heavily here. I just got back from a short trip south, I paid $1.97 / gallon which at today’s exchange rate is about $2.46 Canadian.
When I went out today I needed to fill the car, it was (including the exchange) $5.67 / gallon.
