Really can't make a blanket statement like that.
If I don't switch the booster on I get ZIP, ZERO, NO channels.

AND
I have had the circuit board where the antenna attaches to go out also. Symptoms where no channels.
Had that happen on 2 of the TV's. i had them replaced at a TV repair shop.....yup you can repair a flat screen TV.
