If they're doing business in your state then they should be required to have an agent for service of process in your state. File a small claims action and serve that person.

CarFax is a tool, nothing more. Tools can be misused, but that doesn't mean it's a bad tool.

For example, I bought one of my cars new, and have owned it for many years. CarFax shows my car as purchased new (date & location matching my original purchase), but as having had 3 owners.

I've sold many cars, and would have no problem explaining to a potential buyer that my car hasn't had 3 owners, and this was a mistake on the part of CarFax.

I did car fax and considered it functional as a title search. It had a South Dakota title so I really didn't learn much at all.

Carfax and other similar reports only contain information that is either in the public domain (like DMV records and police reports)and other information that is either volunteered by previous owners or paid service providers. There is no legal requirement that any service, accident, finance or other information be provided by anyone.

About the only information any owner would provide would be positive. No one would intentionally allow negative information to get into a report that could determine whether or not a vehicle would sell or have an influence on the price.

Personally I think the money would be better spent on a thorough inspection by a competent mechanic.

I totally agree with that. I did a CarFax on a vehicle I purchased new from a GM dealer. While still owning the car, I ran the CarFax about 5 years after we purchased it. The report came back with a major accident damage TWO years after we purchased the car! The reported accident happened in a state over 1,000 miles from where we live, in a state we have never been to.

I tried repeatedly for over a year to get this wrong information corrected, but they refused to correct anything.

I usually get CarFax or AutoCheck when I'm looking at a vehicle but it's kind of useless because it doesn't report everything. It *should* report all salvage type titles so that's good so it does offer a bit of security there but for mileage, number of owners, accidents, etc, it's not reliable enough to really know if it's accurate so you can't really depend on it.

The info would be helpful if the info was true. Many times it is totaly untrue. Had a friend who bought a car new. When he went to sell it the carfax showed he was the second owner and that the car had been wrecked. All untrue! False info can be worse then no info.

Carfax certainly won't show you everything but, when spending so much money on a coach, SOME info is way better than no info. When we were shopping for our coach, we signed up for unlimited carfax inquiries for a month then went looking around the country for what we wanted. I pulled a carfax on every coach that was interesting. Most (if not all) had DMV records that showed number of owners and registration states. Some showed service records, very few showed wreck repairs. All of this info is useful.
