I used to be a mechanic and my primary job was to rebuild use carburetors in the late 1970s. You definitely have the wrong base gasket. Does the gasket fit the bottom of the carb? If so, you have the wrong carb too.
Just to be certain, since I can't see the whole gasket. You don't possibly have the gasket in the wrong orientation do you?
