A CEL after fueling should clear up once the cap is secured. Around that vintage Chevy did have problems with the EVAP solenoids. They would take on water and fail. There was a kit for my Avalanche to replace the vent solenoid. If it persists you might want to see if there's a TSB or a kit. Once you get the code google it.
You can get a code scanner for $30 or less. I carry one in my truck to clear a pesky P0121 code (TPS sensor). It won't remote start with the CEL illuminated (which is critical this time of year!).
OBD-II drivetrain codes will not clear no matter how long you disconnect the battery. They need to be cleared with a code scanner or the condition that caused the fault needs to be corrected. If the situation is corrected, the light will stay on until a certain number of restarts without the fault being present. My guess is that you'll get a P0449 code which will usually clear by reinstalling the gas cap. If not...could be an EVAP solenoid.
