changing house batteries gas class "A"

needing change the two house batteries in my 2009 Winnebago due to the top of battery case is bulging. IN do the change beyond the normal safety precautions, and placing wiring back as was, what are things I need to be aware of. Reading in the Winnebago manual that i needed some type of device to plug into cigarette lighter port to story various computer codes. What type of device and what type of codes will be stored.

Am I going to lose the the engine, transmission codes? Or, Am i only going to lose the codes to the radios, etc. The manual did not explain. Trying to get some information and knowledge prior to calling the manufacturer tech, plus being on hold for ever----with probably the answer ----------you need to carry unit to the nearest Winnebago dealer.

any help. last year the tech told me that my unit did not have an charging voltage adjustment screw.

  • Before the first time I took mine out, I took several pictures of the batteries and the connections to them.

Even though I "knew" I would never forget, the pictures came in handy.

I have to scan this computer somebody it appears got past my anti-mal-ware... But enough of that.

If you change the chassis battery then yes you may wish to plug in a "keeper" (usually a 9 volt battery you can get the thing at any auto parts place).

Or you can simply run a jumper cable from the positive house to the positive wires on the chassis.

For the house that should not be needed, just keep it plugged into shore power

    SUGGESTION

Before you remove batteris use some red and black spray paint, Red on the positife wires, Black on the negative.

Let dry over night and that way you know what goes where

If there are more than one cable hooked to the positive TIE them all together with either tape or twine. Same on the negative end.

THEN remove the batteries, take to store, get new, relace.
  • Hi,

What make and model is the inverter/charger?

Is there a converter as well?
  • seems to be over charging. the inverter/converter(the one I have) according to Winnebago has no adjustment on the amount of trickle charge the batteries get. They now put devices in that one can adjust. seems this happens when hooked to shore power and not when running from solar or the generator. The inverter / converter which has the capability to adjust the charge rate to the batteries is several thousand dollars plus labor to change over. I am going to have to look into it-------what i am doing now is dangerous and ridiculous.
  • Hi,

The house battery bank should have nothing to do with the engine "losing codes".

I would be investigating why the batteries are bulging.
