Changing tire size from 225's to 245's

Hello all, I would like to know if it would be ok for me to change my front and dually rear tire size from 225/70 19.5 with 245/70 19.5's. My concern is the rim size (if it is wide enough) and if the clearance between the rear tires would still be ok. I have a 1989 Fleetwood bounder 34' with the 454. 46,000 miles on a Chevy P30 (or is it P32 chassis?) I would like to change all 6 because a friend has the complete 4 year old Bridgestone 250's with 70% tread left he would let me have for $350.00. Any help is always appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  • Thanks for all the help. Looks like I will keep the tire size I have. I'm not going to change my wheel size. I'm grateful for all the response. Thanks, Jim
  • The Bridgestone 245/70-19.5 requires a 7.5" wheel. You most likely have a 6" wheel. The tire size is just plain pushing the limit to much. You would have a hard time keeping that tire on the wheel.

If your rim width is 6 in I would not put the on. The width is stamped on the inside of the rim.
  • You can use the 245 mm wide tires on the front, if the rims are wide enough.

In the back, because each tire will be almost a inch wider, you can not use them, they will exceed the allowed space between the tires, and not leave any space for the tires to bulge at the bottom without touching each other, and causing tire damage. You would need about 3" of space at the top of the tires to have space for 1" wider tires and still leave a inch between the replacement tires once everything is mounted and done.

You also need to check the date codes on the used tires. If they say something like 2110, then they are manufactured on the 21st week of 2010, and are only about 3 years old. If it says 0808, then it would be the 8th week of 2008, even if the buyer bought them in 2009, the tires are now 5 years old, and will require replacement in only a few more months.

  • How do I check the offset on the rear duals? How do I measure it? Thank you.
