There is a thing in the front suspension of all the Ford vans called bushings, and they typically need replacement anywhere from 40,000 to 80,000 miles. When you drive one with worn bushings, the vehicle will not track well, and will become a handful to drive.
Simple fix, just bring along $800 to cover the labor. And if you own the vehicle for 50,000 miles, you will only need to do it once, so basically only $0.08 per mile.
The GMC 5500 series is a large truck, not a van front end. However GMC has not built them in about 5 years, so you can not buy a new one. GMC still makes a 3500 cut-away van, but it has a more limited GVWR than the Ford vans. So most of the longer class C's have the Ford E-450 chassis.
In about 5 years, Ford will have transferred all production of van front ends from the older Econoline series to the new Transit series. Ford will start production of the Transit cab and chassis next summer, and keep production of the E-series E-350 and E-450 dual rear wheel vans until at least 2018.
So buyers will have a choise of the new transit van with it's 365 HP V6 Ecoboost or the Econoline E-450 with a higher GVWR of 14,050 pounds and V10 with about the same horsepower. And higher MPG with the V6.
