Chevy C5500 Kodiak HID Bulb Replacement

So this weekend I went and installed HID replacement lamps in my RV due to the OEM lights and lamps being useless. Anyway, the install went as planned. No issues until I turned them on and found that my HI beams were on when the rig was set to Low beams and then my Low beams went on when I had the rig set to High beams. Anyone every install HID bulbs in their Kodiak and run into this issue???

  • What will happen is that when you get everything wired correctly, the DRL system will activate your HIDs. They will be on all of the time.

Under the dash on the passenger side is a fuse box that has a DRL fuse in it. 13, 15...18...something like that. Anyway...pull the fuse. You will still have the green DRL indicator illuminated on the dash but your headlights will now operate normally.

  • Thanks! I have dual headlamps on each side. Now all 4 are both hi/lo lamps and I have all new bulb housings as the stock ones are crap.

I'm assuming you have single bulb headlights. Some Topkicks have dual headlamps I.e. separate hi and lo. If you have seperate hi and lo headlights, ignore everything below;)

If you bought standard HIDs, or hi-beam HIDs with Halogen high-beams, nothing will happen. Standard HIDs won't even come on, and halogen high-beam HIDs will operate the DRLs as normal.

If you bought Hi/Lo HIDs, where the bulb moves position, using them without disabling DRLs will probably burn up the controller and/or positioning solenoids.

BTW - Are you using the stock headlight housing? If yes, you are not making the most of your HIDs, and you are most likely blinding other drivers. Hella makes a conversion housing with an appropriate lens for HIDs. We used them on several of the fleet trucks, and they were well worth the investment.

  • There is a big thread I started a few years ago about me doing the conversion.

Anyway...you can get two harnesses that simply plug in that change the wires around for you.

PS. Don't forget to disable your DRLs or that will be your next big surprise.
  • I put two led lights in the fog light holes from Arsenalled.com and now I can see everything and it was a $100 fix!
