- wolfe10ExplorerWelcome,
Please post pictures of what is chewed.
Have you confirmed the voltage fluctuation with a digital voltmeter at the chassis battery? That will tell you if a real or gauge issue.
Assume you have checked all connections at alternator and battery isolator and batteries. - azrvingExplorerMaybe some of the wiring has been chewed on.

The more information you provide in your questions, the more helpful the answers will be. - BoogiemachineExplorerSorry it was quite hard to figure out how to post an image here you go
Yes all the connections were checked and I cleaned up the battery terminals. chassis battery is bouncing from 14-16.2 - opnspacesNavigator IIThose look like vapor canisters. The vapor canisters capture the fuel vapor as it expands in the fuel tank and absorbs it into some activated charcoal. At some point in time a solenoid opens and allows the engine to suck fresh air through the charcoal in the canister and pull the vapor into the engine to be burned.
The chewed canister will not cause the alternator problem. My guess though is whatever animal chewed on the canister also chewed on the alternator wiring. And for what it's worth, I'm betting that is the bottom of the alternator just above the canisters in the picture. - DFordExplorerHere's a picture of a Ford charcoal canister for comparison to what you're showing:
- RLS7201Explorer IIIf you alternator is truly flucting after using a voltmeter. I suspect the voltage regulator is failing. It is mounted on the back of the alternator and is easily changeable without removing the alternator. If you elect to remove the alternator, the bottom bolt will be corroded in the aluminum hole and will require considerable effort to get out. Once loose the bolt will slide very tightly next to the radiator fan shroud, but will come out with effort.
You have already been given good advice on your charcoal canister.
Richard - BoogiemachineExplorerSo it looks like one of the brushes of the regulator was sheared. Just rebuilt it and I’ll test it tomorrow. Thanks for all the help!!!
- HorsedocExplorer IIDid you every determine what animal chewed it, or what happened? Cannot imagine what creature would be wanting to chew gasoline vapors.
- ArchHoaglandExplorerI have two friends whose RV had engine rodent damage.
Their insurance companies covered the repair.
Have you checked with your insurance company?
