Class A Configuration

Well, I have another dilemna. I am a disabled person and have an electric wheelchair. I am retiring and dreaming of becoming a full timer. I would like to take a 4 passenger golf cart with me across the country to use at campgrounds and boondocking. I cannot imagine being without the electric wheelchair but would do just fine in a golf cart. I have looked at MH toy haulers. I need a real bed to sleep in (as does my wife) and the only Class A I saw that has that is the Newmar 3920/1. A 5th wheel is out because it is too hard for me to move about from truck to trailer. The Newmar 3911 with wheelchair lift is nice, but, I want to be able to ride around with my wife. I do not want to use the wheelchair while she walks as she too has walking issues. We will most likely be using a Jeep Contour as our toad. In the 10 ft. garage of the 3920, it will be a very tight fit. Garage is 10 ft. long, cart is 9'7". Leaves 2-1/2" front and back. Cart is 4.5' wide and wheelchair which would be parked right next to it is 30" wide. That leaves about 11" to share between either garage side plus the space between the cart and wheelchair. I also plan on having a washer/dryer stack or combo, not sure which yet.

My question is this: Is there another way to transport the wheelchair, golf cart and the toad? I have not camped in 28 years so have not seen the various possible configurations. This whole idea of a garage is new to me. I am trying to stay in a MH under 40 feet and I know somethings has got to give. Any thoughts are gratefully appreciated. Thank you!

  • Welcome to the forum. I'm not sure of the dimensions, but Travel Supreme made a mid engine MOHO with a drive in garage. There are not a lot of them out there, but might be large enough for the cart and wheelchair. If you search under "Travel Supreme ME" you can find some additional info and pics. Here are a few pics for one I found for sale in Phoenix:

  • rockhillmanor: I did not think of that. Will have to look into bed sizes and the cart we want.

2chiefsRus: We considered that. This wheelchair cost 5x what the golf cart will cost.

Of course, a P/U truck is expensive also (about the same as the wheelchair) but perhaps the Jeep has seen its day. Must look at specs.

Wow, thank you both for such a quick response!

A chuckle here: I made my first post here recently on what turned out to be a hot topic (or non-resolvable). On gasser vs. diesel, but I neglected to check the box for me to get an email with a response to my post. Well, a month later I saw there were 16 pages of excellent responses and the thread was closed, lol. A big THANK YOU to all respondents.
  • We met a couple traveling. He was totally confined to an electric wheelchair due to a farming accident. She was able-bodied. They traveled with TWO wheelchairs with one functioning as his back-up. They would ride around the campground in both wheelchairs, him in one and her in the other one, to ensure the back-up was always used and ready to go. Maybe get a second wheelchair instead of the golf cart?
  • What I have seen may do is they tow a lightweight pick up truck as a toad and the golf cart is carried inside the pickup truck.
