Actually, gas tanks usually only explode in the movies (not always, but in most cases). I'm a certified fire investigator and engineer, and a gas tank with gas in it is above the upper explosive limit (UEL), as there is not enough oxygen in the tank to get to the right mixture. It's when the heat from the fire causes the tank seams to split is when it becomes an issue, and it's usually not an explosion but a huge flame-up due to the new combustible fuel adding to the fire.
Propane, OTOH, is a way different beast....
