The purpose of checking for gas mileage is not only to see what you are getting, but to see any unusual changes. If you are getting an average of 6-7 mpg over 1,000's of miles and then it all of a sudden drops to something like 4-5 mpg (over a period of time), then you might want to check for the cause.
You might have a hidden fuel leak or some other mechanical issue, etc.
It's good to know the numbers.
