Class A on Hwy 1 in No. CA

In September we plan to travel from Southern California to Fortuna to visit our daughter. Getting there is easy enough as we will travel on the 5 and cross over to the 101 on Hwy 20. However going south again, I would like to depart the 101 at Legget and follow Hwy 1 down to the Bay Area. My RV is a 30' Thor ACE 29.2, and I will tow a PT Cruiser on a dolly. Has anyone done this route in a Class A MH? Are there any nice FHU campgrounds on the route, or State Parks that are good for Class A MHs. Thanks in advance for any information.

The variable we can not address is your comfort and skill level in technical driving.

Coach will not be the issue. If a flat land driver, this would be a very daunting stretch. If you are OK in tight, technical driving, go for it.

Best answer yet, having done it in a class A not towing.

I can say as a person that was a professional OTR driver all my life it was a bit of a chore. Plus your passenger will be the one with the best view and the most scariest part of the ride. My passenger was not all that happy.......:B It was better going north.

If you feel good about it, go for it.

  • Did it last year in our 34 foot class A. towing a Jeep. Pulled over a few times to let cars pass. Lots of curves and beautiful. We have added it to our do every year or so list. Campgrounds with out hook ups right on the bluff as close as you can get to the ocean.

Some will try to scare you into not doing this stretch but do not let them as it is a beautiful stretch. Very doable.

    Pogoil.
  • With a rig your size you should not have any problems on this section of Hwy 1. However, you will need to take it slow and make sure to use available turnouts to allow faster vehicles to pass. I would recommend Pomo RV Park just South of Fort Bragg as a great spot to stay while you tour the area.
  • I've never driven it in my motorhome, but I've driven it in my car. There are many parts that are narrow and very windy.............some hairpin turns. If you take it nice and easy, I don't think you'll have any trouble. Yes, there are several nice parks along the way. Check RV Park Review. I'm sure they'll be several others on here that will suggest specific parks. Enjoy!
