I apologize as I'm sure this topic has been discussed in the past! We are looking at buying our 1st Class A motorhome(33ft-36ft) but not sure if we should go diesel or gas. At times we will be pulling 5,000-6,000lb trailer and not sure if the gas RV will be able to handle that much. Pretty much just traveling through flatland and smaller hills(no mountains). Thanks for any advice!
As has been stated most diesels will have either 5K or 10K recievers but you will need to check to see which has what.
However to complicate you problem the receiver rating is for straight line pulling but the hitch weight...the vertical component will only be 10% of that rating. So, for the 5k hitch you will be limited to 500 lbs of tongue wt which isn't a lot. I have never seen a MH reciever rated for use with an equalizing hitch which has a significantly different mounting arrangement.
The tongue wt is not a static wt when moving and this is the reason so many MH have had the receiver break loose from the chassis.
Good luck
