I think that you can find something between $5K and $10K that will be decent, though it may have high miles. Still, if you take care of it, that should not be a problem. You can find out how to fix anything on the internet! I have a 2006 and have had to fix stuff, too. RVs always need some kind of work, it seems. It will be wise to keep aside an emergency fund in case you have a large repair - but that should be the case for any RVer.

Chris has spent months living in his van and even had his girlfriend traveling with him - and they got on quite well. Good luck!

I have a 1990 Dodge Xplorer also. I love it and paid a lot less than $5000 for mine. I was lucky on the price as I got it via an Estate. Keep looking and you will find one in your price range. Try not to go into debt when buying one. :)

We had a river clean-up this weekend, 3 major non-profits involved. The take-out point was at a tubing company south of town. I noticed that the owner of the company had an older Dodge Roadtrek just sitting there, along with his three Dodge shuttle vans. I mentioned that I had owned two RT's, and we got to talking. He said it was a '93 with a 318, and that he'd bought it just a few months back for $4500. His wife did not approve, and wanted something newer. He was going to sell it a guy who had offered $5k.

I just glanced thru a side window, but it looked nice on the outside, appeared to be intact inside, and even had alloy wheels. Of course, this 'un is on the wrong side of the country, but it shows that they are out there.

Class "B" vans are in high demand. Even vans made back when people were wearing leopard skin prints are still commanding five digits.

San Diego is a very RV hostile area as well, so a trailer may be iffish.

With just a $5000 budget, I wonder if one would be better off just buying a cargo van and using that. As money comes in, one can get a futon, porta-potti, get a ceiling vent, 12 volt system and solar panel installed,

Better to look for a small lightweight "burro" type of camper that you can tow with your current vehicle. Lots of people tow these with small cars and have a great time.
