Class C Cabover Leak Management, Repair and Rebuild

I have a 2000 Winnebago, Minnie Winnie. No doubt most of us have struggled with a Class C leak at some time or another. I got a real surprise 3 years ago, when right after a large rain I had water in the cabover. Winnie had been purchased less than a month earlier. Being new to a Class C and having to deal with that was very stressful! I went through all of the choices, never did find a company I could be comfortable with and ended up managing it myself. In three years, Baby Girl (my Catahoula) and I have traveled 23 states and over 20,000 miles. Yep, still leaks from time to time. We have just completed 4 months in Montana at Glacier National Park and were leak free. Coming back to Texas, with my temporary fix wearing off, leaks reappeared. I would still be interested in a rebuild to make the cabover smaller, more aero dynamic and fiberglass. If you know of anyone who is doing such work, let me know. Till then, I'll continue to manage and take trips.

  • Snowman9000...do you have the contact information for the fiberglass man in Mexico. Early this year I received an estimate for dental work in SE Texas...$9,200. I knew that a lot of people went to Mexico for medicals. I did my research and had the work done for $1,900. AWESOME! I'd use the dentist again. So, fiberglass work in Mexico...I'm game!!!!
  • Make sure you say B+ cap, not B. There are plenty of B+ models with the cap screwed to a regular filon body like yours. The width of the body will have to match exactly. Probably the height above the cab roof will have to be quite close.

If you call Bontrager's Surplus in Michigan, just north of Elkhart, ask them if they know a source for fiberglass motorhome front caps, they might have a tip for you. If they don't, ask them who they would call to find out. If you are not shy about calling around like that, you'll find someone.

Elkhart is ground zero for RV stuff, that's well known. Anything and everything you could possibly need for an RV can be found somewhere within 30 miles of there. Including repair guys. There are small component factories all over the place. But there does not seem to be any easy way to search for any of it online.

I'm sure there is a cap made that fits your body's size, if you can manage to find it.

Refitting in this manner sounds easier than it probably is. Myself, I'd probably throw in the towel and tear it apart, and rebuild it. There are plenty of documented rebuilds on here and elsewhere on the internet. It's more time than money.

Did you ever read the Tioga and George blog? He had a fiberglass guy in Mexico take off his corner trim and simply fiberglass over the seams. Turned his rig into a poor man's one piece body. It's another outside the box idea.
  • THANKS Snowman9000! Never thought of a B cabover! You're ABSOLUTELY right about "finding" someone. I've got tons of stories of construction I've done around the home because I couldn't "find" somone I was comfortable with. It may happen here. I like the B cabover idea! Need to look into that area.
  • Interested in a vacation to Elkhart, Indiana? You'd have to do some sleuthing, but you could probably find a supplier of front caps in the B+ style and have one installed by someone in the area. Probably a day's work, I bet. Or you could have someone there do a regular cabover rebuild.

Believe me, the people exist there who can get and install whatever you want. Finding them is the hard part!
