"Taking care of it myself" means having service computers, training, special tools to name a few. Sure, a code reader and a few common tools go a long way. You're still limited to what you can actually "repair".
My thinking is to go with what you like and can afford. The Ford/GM chassis units are probably the most common. Although, we are seeing a lot of M-B units on our trips.
Check into factory service availability in your area. Just because there is a dealer just down the road, don't bet on them taking your RV chassis in for repair or even service. For example, we live in area of about 1M people. The closest GM dealership that will work on our RV chassis is 108 miles away.
