The mercedes chassis is wonderful until its not. parts labor and service centers are big money when tiny issues arise.
One of the worst absolute worst computer glitches I can think of is mercedes def 10 start countdown. Instead of limp mode its bricked and has to be towed to a mercedes dealership and ONLY can mercedes reset and get u back going again. scanners will NOT fix it. looking at an easy 1k to fix it.
parts are not something u will find much online or in the local auto parts stores not to mention they are very very difficult to work on diy even with lots of experience.
Just one example. However on the flipside they do run into long long service intervals without much trouble. They are more and more popular
for service fleet industry. eg ambulance fedex, rv etc.
The ford chassis is very very reliable with parts available any where including the middle of NOWHERE. Not totally without its own set of problems (ford isnt much better then gm) but you will get way further with an off the shelf scanner and any work can be performed by just about any shop anywhere in the country.
the cutaway van chassis has been around forever with only few updates every so many years not only making parts cheaper but not adding so many features to them keeps them way more simpiler to fix and repair unlike the insane amounts of electronics on say the f-250 or f-150
As awesome as the mercedes chassis are personally im anti german anything ONLY because their products are so over engineered they fail. its gut wrenching hearing the horror stories on parts and labor costs.
But hey if you got lots of money they most certainly live up to the name of the ultimate driving machine (bmw i know) if you take the money part away german cars are absolutely fantastic.
Now once the asians get in on the rv thing I'd be jumping on that bandwagon immediately. sorry the dolphin just won't cut it. hehe
NONE of the two I have shown above are Sprinter or Mercedez, What I listed above are both on a FORD chases. Check out Winnebago links below.
