2015 Ford Explorer XLT (4 wheels down).
What system are you using for your Ford Explorer? I have a 2014 Explorer Limited and looking to do either a 4 wheels down or a car dolly. Any advice would be appreciated.
I'm using the Blue Ox baseplate, Blue Ox Patriot braking system, Blue Ox Aventa LX tow bar. I have towed about 4,000 miles so far and the setup works quite well. My Explorer is the front wheel drive, so (per the Ford manual), I tow in neutral, place the ignition in the accessory position, and have to run the engine every 6 hours when towing. I had a Brake Buddy towed vehicle battery maintainer (39332) put in at the time of the Blue Ox installation so that the Ford battery didn't wear down with the ignition in the accessory position while towing. My Class C has a 7,500 class 3 hitch, but if I recall, my Explorer is less than 4,500 pounds.
I had considered a tow dolly, but ultimately decided that I didn't want to deal with it at a campsite. Although the total Blue Ox setup was more expensive than a tow dolly, (for me) the ease of use of four-wheel down towing made it worth it.
