Class C Vortec V-8 towing Ford Fusion.

I have a 2007 Itasca Impulse with the Chevy GM Vortec V-8 engine. The specs on this RV say it has a 3500 pound tow rating. I have a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid which has a 3700 pound curb weight. Should I be concerned that this RV can't tow my Fusion?
I am looking at making a trip to Colorado this summer and would be going through some steep grades on the way to Utah. I assume I would be better off unhooking the Fusion when going over the steeper elevations.
I haven't taken the RV on any trips yet.

Thanks for any feedback.
  • I have pulled trailers and equipment since I was a young boy working on the farm but do not claim to be an expert, just someone with a lot of experience and never having any issues. IMO, you do not have the tongue weight issue to be concerned about but you have more weigh to pull and that weigh will also push you. You may notice the additional weight while maneuvering winding roads and you will definitely notice it during braking. The drive train of your rig, engine, transmission, brakes, differentials, frame and tow hitch, are designed to pull and tow a stated amount of weight and the vehicle you want to pull exceeds that weight. My Super C is designed to tow much heavier weights than your RV and while flat towing my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited I can feel the Jeep push while driving curvy roads so much so that on a trip last summer coming out of Emminence ,MO on HWY 19, I disconnected the tow bar and had my girl friend drive the Jeep until we were farther north and out of the Mark Twain Forest area. My chassis is an F550 diesel 4 wheel drive. Your rig is quite a bit smaller than mine. I hope this helps. Merry Christmas

Don't know what others tow, we have been towing a Pontiac Vibe (2007) for years, no problem at all. We too have a class c with Chevy 6.0 V8. Fourwinds, 30ft. That said, I started a topic here recently asking what folks were towing behind their C. DW wants something a bit larger with auto transmision.(Methinks what she really wants is a Jeep Wrangler). nothing happening yet :)

Your vehicle has a 2700 pound curb weight, so you are well under the 3500 pound rating :)

  • The more I have researched, I don't find many instances where people are towing behind Class C's with the Vortec engine. Could this be due to the lower tow rating?
