Vortec V-8 towing a Ford Fusion (3700 lbs)

I have a 2007 Itasca Impulse with the Chevy GM Vortec 6.0L V-8 engine. The specs on this RV say it has a 3500 pound tow rating. I have a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid which has a 3700 pound curb weight. Should I be concerned that this RV can't tow my Fusion? I am guessing when I add in the weight of the tow bar, the total towing weight might approach 3800 pounds.

  • The issue is usually more about stopping than getting going.. I would pull a toad. My days of going toadless are probably over.

Are there any modifications I could do to the Impulse such as adding a transmission cooler, to facilitate the additional ~300pounds above the 3500 lb tow capacity?

    NO!:S

:) I figured that was the answer, but figured I would ask anyway just to be sure. I guess my only option is to sell my Fusion and buy a lighter vehicle which I can tow behind the Itasca.

    It depends on who responds.
As I stated, that is exactly what I did on my old Tioga. While I did not have extra transmission cooling installed, it might not be a bad idea. I did have the hitch reinforced, though. Installing a 5000 lb. capacity hitch would have accomplished the same thing, at three times the expense.
Keep in mind that GCWR and towing capacity are manufacturer's RECOMMENDATIONS, not legal limits. In fact, GVWR is not a legal limit in many states! The GVW on the registration IS a legal, DO-NOT-EXCEED, limit! However, not many states put a GVW limit on a motorhome of any kind.
There ARE shops around the country that have the technical and engineering staff available to modify and recertify a vehicle. IIRC, there are two such shops here in Montana.
So, yes, it CAN be done, either in your back yard or professionally in a shop.
Or, you can put a 5000 lb. capacity towbar on your vehicle and get on down the road.
    It is your choice.
    Good luck.

  • If it was MY rig, I would not be worried about it.
That does NOT mean that I am "recommending" that you go ahead and do it.
It is merely a statement of what I would do, no more, no less.
But, it is NOT mine. YOU have to do what will allow you to be comfortable.
I had a similar problem wanting to tow a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited behind a 29 foot Tioga Class C with the Ford 460 engine. I have no idea what the Jeep weighed with the modifications that were installed, I did not weigh it. I had a well-qualified welder reinforce the hitch, and hit the road. Nothing bent, nothing broke, nobody was injured or died, in several thousand miles of towing on the plains and in the mountains.
So, yes, I can quite honestly say "Been there, done that, no problems!"
It is still a decision only YOU can make about your rig.
    Good luck.
  • Yes, you should be concerned. You might get away with it. But if anything at all goes wrong the insurance companies will be all over your specifications with a fine tooth comb.
The rating is not just about the hitch. Your suspension, axles, wheels, brakes and who knows what else goes into the limiting you to 3500 lbs with the Workhorse versus the 5000 lb limit with the Ford option in your RV.
Like your toad. Like your RV. Don't care so much for the combination.
    Sorry
