Closet fowl odor

On the last two trips using our 2002 37u southwind i noticed a fowl odor coming from the closet right above the washer/dryer combo, nothing from inside the washer itself. I did notice that it only happens when the tanks are full, could there be a vent line that has come loose behind the washer/dryer and if so must the washer/dryer be removed to get to it or does this sound like another issue.

Fondon, I would think it has to be a vent or the P-trap drain for the washer has dried out. If you run the washer, does the smell go away for a while?

Maybe there's a bird in there.

I'm calling "Fowl" on that post.
  • Depending on how often you use the washer/dryer will determine whether the P-trap dries out. If you're not going to use it for awhile, a half teaspoon of mineral oil down the p-trap will keep it from smelling. Once the p-trap empties, it allows the sewer gas to come into the coach. You shouldn't have to pull the W/D to access it. Look behind the W/D and you'll see the tube. Try pouring a cup of water down there first. If your problem doesn't go away, then look for other more difficult issues. Start with the easy stuff first....Dennis
  • My guess is that your trap is dry. Put a quart of water down the drain to refill the trap. If there is no water in the trap, the tank gasses can come right on through. Living in the dry climate of Arizona, our traps will dry out in a couple of months. I frequently pour some water down them to keep them full.
  • I agree with your diagnosiss. Leak in vent tube most likely. Pull the appliances, fill the tank and run your hands along the vent shaft to find leak. Best of luck
