Coach Insurance In Storage

Our insurance premiums took a big jump this year and I'm looking at various options to see if I can get some better rates but one thing just popped into mind. The coach is in storage for most of the winter but I've never looked into suspending coverage during that time.

I'll be contacting the insurance company this week but before I do so it would be useful to hear from others on this topic.

Oh, I should add that the coach is stored in an enclose steel garage located on my property.

Thanks for any comments.

  • Huh
Our Allied Insurance person said they didn't do storage coverage? Said the company's price figured in the storage time most RV's have.
I did check with GS just last month and it was a much higher premium.
  • Nothing is "secure" anymore. I had a 40' Tourmaster in a 'secure' storage facility. The thief (s) broke into the coach, hotwired it and drove it right through the fence, onto the street and away they went. It was recovered several weeks later, with obvious front end damage and lots of other stuff. Fortunately, it was recovered about 10 days AFTER I received my insurance check. Think this decision over carefully, the money you save may not really be a savings...Dennis
  • I know the comprehensive insurance is much bigger part than the liability insurance.
I buy liability only and it comes to 100-some dollars a year.
Meaning even if you stop liability for 6 months you might end with $50 saving for the hassle.
  • GS lets me go to storage mode - comprehensive only, and I have a lien.

GS also let you raise the deductible on extended warranty during storage if you have one.

Between those two, and storage mode for Dish Network, I save some pretty good cash over the winter, but takes a lot of phone calls to get rolling in the spring.
  • Check with this company. Arizona is one of the 26 states where they write insurance policies. Full coverage, including contents, liability, collision, is only $350/YEAR for our coach. Perhaps they can give you a better rate than you have had in the past. Auto Owners Insurance Company

Because of ever increasing premiums I went to liability only this year ($180/year) BUT your homeowners insurance will not cover damage to the motorhome while in your garage. Progressive will let me switch to full coverage when I go out west this summer for three months. This winter while snow birding I will keep just liability only and take my chances. If nothing else it will help me to drive more conservatively to Fla and back. Your level of self insurance and paying for it may not be as large as mine.
  • I know you used to be able to do this with USAA insurance on recreational type vehicles (no experience with motorhomes) like motorcycles.

Good point. There is no lien holder so that should not be an issue.
