COE Cg charging $20 to dump

I am staying in Palm City Fl for the winter without the MH but I took a bike ride to St Lucie locks which is a a Army Corp of Eng CG and they were charging $20 to dump if you dumped first before you camped. I have not seen this posted before at other govt CG's. I have only stated at a half doz COE CG's but have not seen it at the ones I stayed at. Is this a new thing or has this been going on for a while in various parts of the country?

  • Avoid the charges! Just pull over a storm drain at a Walmart parking lot and let it fly! No hose or connections needed.
  • Some places have to haul sewage out so charging to dump for non campers helps cover those hauling costs.

    And WHY not!

Vermont state parks charge $30 to dump (for RV's 30' or longer, $15 for shorter units) but only $18 - $22 per night to camp (varying based on the site and whether you're a resident), which includes use of the dump station. It's been that way for at least a couple of years.
  • Over here in the west, I've seen that many places over the last 12 years. Especially if the CG is located near dry camping areas. What happens is people camp out for free on public lands, then once a week head over to a paid campground and dump for $5 or sometimes for free.

The $20 charge to dump if you're not staying at that campground is to prevent too many boondocking people from dumping. Many of those CGs have cesspools and are not connected to sewage treatment.

North Bend Park at John H Kerr Dam only charges $20 per night to camp. I have only been there once to dump without camping and they only charge me the day rate of $4 to come in and dump.
