As said check SCA in coolant with test strips. Cummins can do the check.
I have the 300 HP version of this same 8.3 in my 1995 coach. Not a rocket ship towing in the mountains but no problems getting to the top.
Price is very good for the vintage and should serve you well. Ours has no slide as well and has caused us no problems. We are comfortable in it on long trips. We do not live in it or may need more space.
The 250 HP. can easily be tuned up to 300 HP. with an inexpensive kit without causing any issues.
