You've asked a lot of good questions. I've had both a gas and a diesel motorhome, and do most of my own work when possible. I don't see much difference in maintenance costs. Maybe I've just been lucky but we've put about 65000 on our Holiday Rambler without much breaking.
My preference is to buy the largest (longest) coach you can find. When you're stuck inside with two or more people, that box gets a little small.
