RVHanna, it might help if you can tell us where you are. 'In the middle of a road trip' could put you just about anywhere.
There is a procedure to stop the 'run' as they can drill a small place in the windshield. Your insurance may replace the windshield as cracks can reflect the sun blinding you.
I had two 'stars' repaired on our previous coach. One was totally invisible, the other was not but they did not run after the repair.
They say just as soon as you get a rock chip, stop the coach, put a piece of tape over the hit as not to get dirt and dust in the hole. That will make for a cleaner repair.
