Creede/Lake City CO

Anyone ever travel from Creede to Lake City and on to Gunnison with a 40 foot MH? Is it possible? I've taken the million dollar highway with no problem but not sure of State Route 149. Planning for the summer.
  • Slumgullion Pass is very beautiful (although between Creede and LC, you will be astonished by the huge area of beetle-killed spruce). It's a long descent into Lake City. To our astonishment, on New Year's Eve, when we headed to Lake City to go to Bruno's French Restaurant's NYE dinner, we passed a big motorhome climbing up the pass toward Creede, towing a Jeep like ours. We waved and flashed our lights and he probably thought we were warning him of something. So, yes, you can take a big rig over that pass.
  • For us Natives YES, but for a flatlander MAYBE.

Yes you can do it - take your time and watch the curves.

  • Went there last summer from Oklahoma City in my 44ft pulling my jeep. No problem, roads were good all the way. Beautiful RV Park. Left there and went across Wolf Creek Pass and on to Santa Fe. Have a great time.
  • I went thru there a few years ago.
Used first gear going down hill and that controlled the speed very well.
There are mostly, 20 to 25 mph curves going into Lake City from the pass.
    Go slow & easy.
This is in my rig, pictured below.

  • If you've done the Million Dollar Highway (550) then 149 will be a piece of cake for you. We've done both and will do so again this summer. You could also purchase online the "Mountain Directory for Truckers and RVers" for a mile by mile guide. We use it often. Have a good trip!
  • Have done several times with 40' plus car and atv. No problem, up slow, down slow. We stay the summer months in LC.
  • Slumgullion Pass will be no problem for you if you can safely navigate the Million Dollar highway.

Once you have figured out how to do one mountain pass, the rest are more of the same. Slow going uphill, full exhaust brake going downhill so you hardly ever have to touch your brakes. No problems.

Not exactly. Some are narrower and curvier than others, making them more difficult.
  • When we got to the RV park in Lake City last summer, the owner of the park was quite surprised that the brakes on our coach didn't smell. Seems like some folks have had some issues with that pass.

    YMMV
