Had an intermittent problem with turn signals, removed the covers for the steering column and the wiring harness near the top of the column had a plastic connector that was almost apart from the weight of the wiring. Closed the connector and zip-tied.
My chassis does not have the smart wheel, but your symptoms sound like a broken wire or loose connector.
