Cummins 300 Engine Code 2388

I have a 2005 Fleetwood w/a 300 Cummins diesel engine. Check engine recently stays on. Technician says engine shows a engine code 2388. He recommends replace Turbo at $4,000.00 Engine starts and runs perfectly, as it always has since new. Coach only has 13,600 mi. Is the technician correct? Problem appears electrical to me, mechanically coach runs well.

  • Never forget the old adage; If you do not get the answer you want just keep asking different sources. Eventually some one will give you the answer you are looking for. This seems to be the majority of the advice you are receiving.

  • We have a 04 300 Cummins in a Freightliner chassis. We had 2 turbos replaced by techs before we changed dealerships. Turned out to be the fuel strainer that was plugging up that was causing the same code. New tech said that the previous tech hadn't followed the troubleshooting flow chart far enough. A new strainer is about $15.

  • Hi,
I have I have an o4 300 cummins in my motorhome.Had the same problem with mine, was told vgt turbo (which is a sliding vane turbo cokes up with extended idling, causing codes).Checked around found 4 differnt sourcws say turbo only available as an assembly on this years motor.Price was comparable.

Mechanic said when cold, start and as soon as you have air pressure get moving, just not to pull it hard till warm.Said fast idle was no good either.

mine was replaced at 29000 miles. dave
  • I looked up troubleshooting for an ISL-CM850... I am guessing the model.

It appear from what I see that there is a good possibly that the turbocharger may need to be replaced.

I can give more accurate information if I know your engine serial number.
  • If it's anything like the B engines in PU's, it's the sensor itself that's bad and NOT the turbo.
  • First, replace your technician. $4k on nothing more than a code? Tell me there's more to it than that.
