With the coach engine running, try holding down the auxiliary/emergency start switch while trying to start the generator. You may need two people to do it depending the switch locations, but if it works, the coach battery is likely not holding enough charge on its own, and paralleling it with the engine battery gives the genny enough current to get going. Much more like a real "jump start".
Some coaches connect the two battery sets anyway when the engine is running, but not all. The ones using a diode style isolator charge the coach battery when the engine is running, but the loads are kept isolated.
