Bruce Brown - you can assure me? I realize weather has its affects, but in this case it was in perfect condition - we had it washed and waxed regularly at Premier in Eugene Oregon btw when Terry was managing there and it looked brand new until the people at Oasis washed and waxed it. A bit too coincidental.
TANDLG, I'm sorry for your loss.
On the paint issue, I will absolutely assure you. I've done a fair amount of paint work in my lifetime, peeling clear is caused by poor preparation and/or age. ( Paint Work On My Own Coach )
Locally there is a '03 DP that I have not seen move since it was purchased. It was on the lot the same time we bought our '03, at that time I had a nice conversation with the folks who bought it. They took it home and parked it, I haven't seen it move since - and I drive by there at least once a week. The clear is peeling badly around the roof edges. The sides are fairly well protected from the sun, the roof edges are not. I can also assure you excessive washing didn't cause this clear to peel either. :W
Mr Mark is right, your MH is now 13 years old, it was age that took it's toll, not poor washing.
Now...had they taken an old school buffer to it was old school compounds, it's possible to burn off some clear, but that would show itself as dull paint marks, not peeling and a case of sunburn.
I think you were closer than you thought with your description of "sunburn peel" as thats exactly what happens over time.
I have to agree with Bruce and Mr. Mark on the peeling paint. I like to think that I take good care of our MH, but the front cap is peeling, and it started on the white parts about 3 years ago. I believe it is due to the different expansion rates of the clear coat and the lighter color base, on the fiberglass shell. I believe I have done my last base/clear paint job, due to the uncertainties involved in the paint and adhesion problems.
