Dana axle identification 60?61? 70 or 80

?

80. That's a stout under your rig. Are you planning some upgrades for it?

model 80/286 full float, so is this a DANA 80 or 70.....?

I will take a look again, I did look for that tag earlier and did not see it. The axle hosing is quite large and I will wash the axle in solvent and look for additional Id's. You fellas are great and I do appreciate all input. I am a shift worker so please be patient. carringb please stay tuned.

OK did a little more digging. The Dana-80 was used through the 2000 model year (when they downsized to the Dana "78"). You have an 11.25" ring gear, which is larger than the newer E450's, and 35-spline axle shafts which is easier to source limited slip or lockers for. Beyond that, there are still a lot of small parts which very from axle-to-axle. Is the axle tag still attache to the diff cover? It's like a metal strip between two of the bolts, usually vertical on the driver's side. This will have the BOM number which can be referenced to find the exact parts your axle came with (of course, things could have been changed if you are not the original owner).

It is a 1997 Esuperduty, I believe the E 350 and E 450 labeling came the year later 1998-.

The cover numbers don't tell much as far as I know.

The housing numbers are probably there but caked in heavy oily dirt.

Was yours built on the E350 chassis or the E450/"E-SuperDuty" chassis?

The E350s all got the Dana 70, usually the D70-2U but some got the D70-HD.

If its the heavier E450/E-SuperDuty chassis, it would have come with a dull Dana 80, or possibly a modified Dana 80, aka Dana 78, which is a Dana 70 differential in the Dana 80 housing, which is what all the newer E450s have. Difference is ring gear size.
