I've been using my GoPro Hero 3 as a dash cam in my truck, on my 4 wheeler and in the coach for years. Offers a great HD video playback with audio.
Nothing wrong with the GoPro, but my dashcam is a much cheaper camera and yet still has a great HD picture. One thing I like about the dashcam I have is it has an impact sensor that will auto save the video. So if you do have an accident the video doesn't get written over. How I use that is I found that if I flick the camera with my finger, it will trigger the impact sensor and save the current video. I think I have a 64 gig card in it so it saves something like 8 to 10 hours worth of video before it writes over the older files. So if something happens in front of me and I want to make sure the video gets saved, I can just flick the camera and then I can get the video later.
The first day I had installed the dashcam I was on the way to an appointment. I was on a rural road and I passed a guy on a motorcycle who had apparently broken down. His buddy was there with a jeep and a rope and as I was passing I saw one end of the rope was tied to the jeep's bumper and they were tying the other to the forks of the motorcycle. I was so tempted to turn around and get behind them because I could just see a great viral youtude video in the making. But I was late so I had to keep going.
