Dash Temperature Control: Hot or Cold, no inbetween

Hi, Now that it's a bit chillier, I've noticed the temperature control knob on my dash is almost either full-on hot or full-on cold. There's a few degrees where I can adjust it between the two, but...

found this in the tech side of the system in proper operations methods

•For best temperature control and comfort, adjust the temperature control knob (hot water valve) and/or the blower fan speed,

so sounds like the temp control knob controls the amount of Hot coolant that flows through the heater core ??? on this system
