Deposit on MH purchase?

The last one we special ordered and after filling all the forms out the salesman as for a $5K deposit and we told him no but would give a $1K deposit on our credit card. He came back after a few minutes shaking his head and told us a deposit was not needed as the manager told him - if we said we were going to buy we would and all they needed was a signature on the special order form.
