My equalizing charger, goes for 24 hours, and does raise the voltage higher than I would like the electronic circuit boards to be exposed to for any period of time longer than a few seconds. As Brett mentioned, using an hydrometer to check progress is the accepted way to see if the equalization has been completed successfully. Large battery banks that are used for power generally go for 24, to 72 hours. Remember sulfation that forms on the plates tends to flake off and accumulate in the bottom of the cells. Breaking the sulfation down by equalization is a hit and miss progression.
