When I am equalizing, the voltage is greater than 16.5 volts. I have a volt/amp meter for the solar arrays, that reads the battery voltage. I would not trust the control boards in an rv to withstand that much over voltage for very long. I do disconnect the batteries and use the converter to supply the MH loads.
Someone said that an alternator can produce up to 18 volts, I know for a fact that they can go well above 135 volts for an extended time. These are Alternators, they produce AC current. The diode packs convert the AC to DC, and a regulating circuit limits the output, depending on temperature and battery state of charge.
