I just looked in my 2012 Jetta owner's manual. While the manual does not specifically address recreational towing, it does have a section on towing the car using a tow bar, and also surprisingly using a rope, both using the Jetta as the tow vehicle and towing the Jetta. I would think that VW would strongly advise against doing that, but it's there in the manual. Anyway, under a heading titled "Towing automatic transmission vehicles" it states to limit speed to 30 mph and distance to 30 miles. To me this translates to an auto trans vehicle is not 4 down towable. However, there are no such restrictions posted for manual transmission vehicles. I interpret this to mean these cars can be towed 4 down with no restrictions. It does mention that if the car has a dead battery, the steering will not unlock. If one uses a braking system that uses the car's electrical system, then it would be prudent to run a charge line to the towed vehicle to make sure the battery does not go dead.
