Diesel vs gasoline

I found an older RV (1983) with a diesel engine in it. I am contemplating doing a engine swap for the extra torque.

Can anyone tell me if this will be worth while? I have a 1988 Travel Master thats at 36 feet long. I havent looked to much into this donor engine. But they want $500 for it or $350 for the whole RV. ha. So I am going to be tearing down another RV to get the engine...

Thanks everyone.

  • Seems to be the same chassis and the donor is smaller. Bigger rv it's the transplant so should handle the torque and weight. I could chop all the frame out and switch it over
  • Prolly be less expensive to just buy a newer MH. I'm betting it will cost a bunch to do that swap. Nothing on the gas MH will hook up to the diesel. So you are looking at AC, heat, major transmission mods, or new trans altogether. And you will more than likely need to beef up the suspension as the diesel is heavier than the gas, and of course a new fuel tank.
    Not worth it IMOP
  • Dan,

    I have done such things.

First Question: Are you a VERY capable mechanic?
Second Question: Are both chassis the same version?
Third Question: Are you a very capable fabricator?
(It is possible that not all the parts you will need will be available at all.)

If the answer to all the questions above is not YES, then back off this dream. It will be a nightmare and you may well end up paying to get both now immobile motorhomes towed away.

  • Yes, first question: What engine is it?
Second, what shape is it in?
Third, is it compatible with the rest or your drive train or are will you swap more than just the engine?
  • Will the transmission/drive line in your Travel Master handle the torque of the diesel? Is the diesel heavier?
There are a lot of questions you need to ask yourself before jumping in to this project.

It is going to be a MAJOR project. Will you be doing all the work yourself? It will probably get expensive.

I would put the time and money into modifying the engine currently in the Travel Master.

Keep us updated on whatever you decide. It would be a cool project, but definitely not for me.
