Just keep in mind that the 280 was measured on a 50 amp circuit that is normally 240 volts, so that means that it's an average of 140 volts per leg. That's still high enough to be worrisome, but probably not instantly catestrophic, and not quite as bad as it sounds on the surface. It's 17% too high, as compared to the normal +/- 10% limits. (And compared to 133% over if it would be if it were on a 30 amp circuit.)
It's good that it was addressed promptly. And it's distressing that it was suggested to remove the EMS - that's the same mentality that would put a penny in the fuse box becuase the fuse keeps blowing. :S
