Eeeeww, that's a mess! So much for being water resistant.
When I made mine I used a slightly larger piece of carpet that wrapped around the top and bottom and then secured in back with eyelets and zip-ties.
They have held up well and when they get worn I just flip them over so the unused carpet is on the top. This would solve your problem and cover the ugly glue.
