This is what we do. But... keep in mind... the DVR will only record/watch one show at a time. No watching one and recording another. The realistic use of this setup is to watch live when you like and record shows when you are not currently watching. When watching live, the "Back" and (after you have backed up sufficiently) "Forward" still work to skip approximately 20 minutes per hour of commercials.
