You cannot just combine the two rates as the two axles is a non commercial rate. Once you go over two axles you become a commercial vehicle and they put it to you. One exception is a SRW PU pulling a trailer if you pay cash and argue that you are not commercial. With dual rear wheels you are commercial on the turnpike even if only two axles.
If money is tight you could save some if you separated the car and had the DW drive it to get the non-commercial rate for two axles. Good luck with doing that for $5 less the fuel you use in driving the car.
I couldn't find anything on the toll calculator about "commercial" rates and becoming a commercial vehicle. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the tolls are calculated by number of axles only. Commercial intent is irrelevant.
I had this same problem when going over the Delaware Memorial bridge once but I simply went through the cash lane and the attendant calculated it correctly.
I think this is more of a computer vs. human problem. The computer has a sensor that counts axles at ground level so my 3 axles plus mud guard plus two toad axles becomes 6 axles. I don't think there is anything else to this.
I've contacted Sunpass and they will review the film and adjust as necessary. I'll let you know what they say.
